Belizean Cuisine
Dining options in Cayo are varied, healthy, and on average very inexpensive. Multiple eateries in either San Ignacio or Benque Viejo, both towns within 15 minutes driving from Chial Reserve, feature international and local cuisine, with the main ingredients being fresh products from the area. From simple food stalls at the markets selling local tacos, bollos, tamales, sabutes or barbecue, to high end fine dining with world class dishes of lamb, rabbit, and exotic local greens like chaya or callaloo, you can find a dish to fit your palette in a setting that you will enjoy and at prices that you can appreciate.
Many people will tell you that it’s often less expensive to eat out than to cook in Belize, and one can be assured that the quality of the food, no matter where you buy it, will be outstanding. Fresh fruit and vegetables, mostly grown by small farmers in a sustainable manner, not because it’s fashionable to do so, but because this is how it has always been done. Take in a local plate of rice and beans, or try your hand at cooking the various local dishes only with fresh ingredients from the various open air markets and stalls within close proximity to Chial Reserve.
